The bedsheet ghost, possibly the most classic Halloween costume, has its roots in medieval Europe. People would dress up as ghosts during the festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season. The costumes were meant to scare away evil spirits and ensure a bountiful harvest for the following year.
